When is 5G Coming to My Area?

With 5G promising to revolutionise the realm of mobile network technology with its super fast download speeds (among other things), it makes sense that the question on a lot of people’s minds is: ‘When will this next generation mobile network be available in my area?’

In this article we take a deep dive into the current status of 5G mobile networks in Australia, and when you can expect to reap the 5G benefits.

What is 5G?

First, some background – 5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology and is the successor to the widely used 4G standard. 5G represents a great improvement over the current system with its promise of:

  • Faster speeds
  • Lower latency
  • Massive network capacity (i.e. more simultaneously connected devices)

It’s not limited to mobile either as a few major Aussie telcos are already offering unlimited data 5G home internet broadband plans.

In a nutshell, 5G stands to give us higher quality streaming, super quick download times, seamless online gameplay and an all-around improved online experience.

Why it Matters it You Have 5G in Your Area

Even if you have a 5G compatible mobile phone at the ready, you won’t be able to hop on the 5G internet connection bandwagon unless you have connectivity. In other words, you’ll need to have 5G network coverage in your area to properly experience the 5G difference.

State of Play

A few of Australia’s major telcos have made great strides in the past few years with the rollout of 5G networks across the country.

Ahead of the pack is none other than MATE’s network provider – Telstra, providing 5G mobile internet coverage to 75% of the Australian population. All in all, this 5G network is currently available to over 3,200 suburbs in over 200 cities and towns Australia-wide.

Some of these 5G-serviced areas include:

  • Sydney
  • Melbourne
  • Brisbane
  • Canberra
  • Queensland
  • Adelaide
  • Perth
  • Hobart

This is good news for MATE customers since we use parts of Telstra’s 5G mobile network which reaches more Aussies than any other telco.

Future of 5G in Australia

As part of its T25 strategy, Telstra has a view to roll out its 5G mobile network to 95% of the Australian population by mid-2025, with other major telcos set to follow suit.
