SMS over IP (SMSoIP) & MMS over IP (MMSoIP) allows MATE mobile customers to send SMS and MMS messages over the 4G/5G mobile network and compatible Wi-Fi networks.
How does SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi work?
SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi allows MATE mobile customers to send and receive SMS/MMS on compatible devices when they’re connected to a compatible Wi-Fi network.
Instead of sending the SMS/MMS via the mobile network, modern smartphones can use the connectivity enabled by Wi-Fi networks to send or receive the message.
Sending SMS/MMS over a Wi-Fi connection is ideal when you can’t connect to the mobile network to send or receive SMS/MMS messages.
How do I enable this feature on my device?
If you are already using Wi-Fi Calling, you just need to make sure your device is also compatible with SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi and has the latest software version installed.
There’s no need to change any other settings on your mobile device.
To be able to use SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi, you need to:
- Have a compatible device which supports SMSoIP/MMSoIP
- Have VoLTE (4G voice) enabled on your device
- Have updated to the latest device OS software
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling on your device
What are the benefits of SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi?
SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi will allow SMS/MMS messages to be sent over the 4G / 5G network. This is especially important as the 3G network will be shut down on 30th June 2024.
MATE mobile customers will be able to send SMS/MMS over compatible Wi-Fi networks independently of mobile network coverage. This potentially allows you to still be able to send and receive SMS messages in areas where you can’t connect to the mobile network but can connect to a compatible Wi-Fi connection.
What mobile devices support SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi?
Most smartphones should be able to support SMS/MMSoIP. If your device supports VoLTE, it should be able to support SMS/MMSoIP.
If you’re not sure, it would be best to check with the manufacturer of your mobile device.
Does using SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi cost any extra?
There are no additional fees associated with using your MATE mobile service for Wi-Fi SMS or SMS over 4G/5G.
