nbn™ Fixed Wireless is a type of nbn™ technology that provides broadband internet and wireless broadband services. A fixed wireless connection is typically used in rural and regional areas of Australia where the distance between premises can be many kilometres. In this circumstance, data travels from an nbn transmission tower located as much as 14kms from your home to a rooftop antenna.
Fixed Wireless Connections
Fixed Wireless connections require an nbn™ network device (NTD) to be installed at the point where the cable from the roof antenna enters your home. Fixed wireless devices connect two fixed locations, such as buildings or towers, with a radio or wireless link. If you don’t have this equipment installed already, an nbn™ installer will conduct a radio signal survey to make sure your home is able to receive a good quality fixed wireless service
If you are able to receive a good quality signal, the nbn™ technician will mount an outdoor antenna on the roof of your premises. They will then drill a small hole through your wall and feed the cable from the antenna into the nbn™ NTD which will be installed on an inside wall of your home. Fixed wireless customers typically rely on electrical power from utility mains to operate their devices, so ensure you have electricity access.
To connect to the internet on Fixed Wireless, you will require a compatible router with a WAN port that will plug into the nbn™ NTD in your home. You can use an existing router/modem (BYO), or you can purchase a modem/router from us. This setup will provide internet access based on your chosen internet plan.

Fixed Wireless Connection Speeds
Download speeds can vary, but customers using our No Dramas nbn Wireless+ Plan can enjoy a maximum 100Mpbs download and 8-10Mpbs upload speeds.
Other factors can influence your internet speeds such as proximity to the wireless tower, congestion times and line of sight for the wireless tower. Considering these factors, some nbn networks can reach download speeds of up to 50Mbps, with recent upgrades offering maximum speeds between 200Mbps and 400Mbps.
Network capacity and data caps are equally important. Fixed wireless plans may have data caps, and network capacity can affect speeds during peak hours. These nbn speed and speed tiers are key points to consider when choosing your plan as some will offer more consistent speeds than wireless broadband.
Backup Options
Mobile networks and mobile phones can serve as backup options for internet connectivity, especially during power outages or when additional flexibility is needed.
Fixed wireless internet is also suitable for online gaming, offering lower latency and higher data caps than satellite internet. Wireless internet providers offer various plans to meet different needs.
