Many factors can influence the speed of your nbn connection. Even if you’re on a fast plan like our Flamin’ Fast nbn 1000/50, you won’t always download at the plan’s top speed.
External factors that may affect your speed
- nbn technology type – Some types, like Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Building (FTTB), and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), have speed limits due to copper wiring.
- Destination server limitations – The server you’re accessing may not support fast downloads.
- Global internet routes – Overseas sites may deliver content more slowly.
- Backhaul congestion – This is the link that connects your area to the internet.
- Fixed Wireless connections – Speeds may vary based on signal strength, location and demand.
If you’re on FTTN, FTTB or FTTC, we can’t confirm your maximum speed until you connect your service. Your experience may vary depending on your line sync rate, home setup and internal wiring.
In-home factors that may impact performance
- Your modem/router – Older or low-end equipment may not be capable of reaching plan speeds.
- Wi-Fi interference – Walls, furniture and other electronics can weaken your connection.
- Internal cabling – Outdated or damaged wiring can reduce performance.
- Your devices – Some computers, phones, and tablets may have slow network cards or old software.
- Network load – Too many users or devices online at once can slow things down.
How to test your speed accurately
To get a reliable speed test result, isolate one device. Also, remove anything that might interfere with the test.
- Disconnect or turn off all other devices linked to your modem/router using Ethernet or Wi-Fi. This includes smartphones, tablets, TVs, streaming boxes, and gaming consoles.
- Connect a laptop or desktop directly to your modem/router using an Ethernet cable. Remove any extra routers, switches or Wi-Fi extenders.
- Close all background programs, especially downloads or cloud syncs. On Windows, check the system tray to ensure nothing else is running.
- Use a reputable speed test site, such as Speedtest.net, and select a server based in your state’s capital city.
If you’re on FTTP, HFC, FTTC, or Fixed Wireless, test your speed using a device connected straight to the nbn device when possible.
